How many watts does my AC use?
Divide BTU by EER: a 12,000 BTU unit with EER 10 draws about 1,200 W. Check the nameplate or the EnergyGuide label for exact figures. SEER is a seasonal average — EER is closer to real draw on a hot day.
Is it cheaper to leave the AC on all day?
With inverter units, maintaining a moderate setpoint is often cheaper than repeated full-power cool-downs. With single-speed units, turning it off when away usually saves more.
How can I cut AC costs?
Raise the setpoint a couple of degrees and use fans, clean filters monthly, shade windows, and keep the outdoor unit ventilated. Each degree higher saves roughly 3–7%.

How AC running cost is calculated

Energy use is power × time: watts ÷ 1,000 × hours × days × duty cycle gives monthly kWh, and multiplying by your rate gives the cost. A 1,200 W window unit at 8 hours a day, 60% duty and 17¢/kWh costs about $29 a month; a 3.5 kW central system under the same assumptions runs about $86.

The two numbers that matter most are duty cycle and rate. An efficient, correctly sized inverter unit in a well-insulated room may idle at 40% duty, while an undersized unit in the sun can run flat out. If your utility has time-of-use pricing, pre-cooling before peak hours can noticeably cut the bill.
