FAQ
Does the total include the last day?
Most employment certificates and licence applications count both the first and the last day of service. Jan 1 to Dec 31 of the same year is 365 days, not 364. This calculator includes the end date by default; untick the box for a plain date difference.
How do I add up experience from several jobs?
Add one row per employer and the totals are summed automatically. Note that most awarding bodies will not count the same calendar period twice, so overlapping rows trigger a warning.
Why show years as both 365-day and calendar figures?
Different bodies convert differently. Engineering and trade licences usually divide total days by 365, while HR and immigration forms often count calendar months. This tool shows total days, months and decimal years side by side so you can use whichever your form asks for.
Do probation and unpaid leave count?
Probation is normally part of continuous service. Unpaid leave, sabbaticals and long-term sick leave are often excluded. If you need to exclude a period, split that job into two rows around the gap.
Can I use this for a visa or PR application?
It gives you the day count and the year conversion, which is what most skilled-worker and permanent-residence forms ask for. Always enter the dates exactly as they appear on your reference letters, since immigration officers check against those documents.
What counts as a month here?
The month figure divides total days by 30, which is the convention on most official forms. The years-months-days breakdown uses 365 days per year and 30 days per month for the remainder.

About the Work Experience Calculator

Enter a start and end date to get the exact number of days worked, then convert it to months and years. Add a row for each employer and the tool sums everything into one total, which is what licence applications, visa forms and job applications usually ask for.

How to use it

Why the month count can differ from a calendar count

Treating a month as 30 days and counting calendar months do not agree, and the gap widens over long periods. Ten full years from 1 January 2010 to 31 December 2019 is 3,652 days. Divided by 30 that comes to 121 months, one more than the 120 months a calendar count gives.

Where eligibility turns on a specific number of months or years, that single month can decide the outcome. Check which rule your form uses and read the matching figure, which is why total days, months and years are all shown together here.
