HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) became the default photo format on iPhones starting with iOS 11 in 2017, and newer Samsung Galaxy devices now use it too. It uses the HEVC codec to store photos at roughly half the file size of JPG while maintaining similar quality.
Despite its efficiency, HEIC has a compatibility problem. Many Windows computers, older devices, websites, and apps cannot open HEIC files. This is why converting to JPG — the most universally supported image format — is so commonly needed when sharing photos.
This converter processes HEIC files entirely in your browser. The decoding happens locally using JavaScript, so your photos are never uploaded to any server. This is both faster and more private than online converters that require uploading your images.
