Where exactly should I measure?
Measure the item at its widest points, including handles, feet, hinges and any plumbing. For the opening, measure the clear space inside the frame and subtract whatever the open door leaf or handle intrudes into that space.
Why add a clearance value?
An exact fit is not a fit. You need room for hands, for padding or blankets, and to move the item without scraping the wall. The 2 cm default is a minimum; 5 cm is safer for anything heavy.
How is the angled check calculated?
Two of the three dimensions are presented to the opening, then rotated from 0 to 90 degrees. Rotating a rectangle changes how much width and height it occupies, so this catches cases that fail straight on but succeed at an angle.
Is passing the elevator door enough?
No. An item can clear the door and still have nowhere to stand inside, so the door and the cabin are checked separately. Long items often only fit diagonally across the cabin floor, and ceiling fixtures make real height less than the stated figure.
The calculator said it fits but it did not
The maths assumes a rectangular box. Real furniture has curves and protrusions, and a narrow hallway may leave no room to rotate the item in front of the door. Measure the corridor width too, and if the result is marginal, hiring a lift is cheaper than damaged walls.

A narrow hallway can also leave no room to turn the item, so it clears the door on paper and still will not go in. When the result is marginal, measure again, then price a lift.
