What is an antipode?
The point on the exact opposite side of the Earth. If you dug straight through the planet center, you would come out at the antipode. It is found by negating latitude and rotating longitude by 180 degrees.
How is it calculated?
Flip the latitude sign (e.g. 37N to 37S) and shift longitude by 180 degrees (e.g. 127E to 53W).
Why is it usually ocean?
About 70% of Earth surface is water and land is unevenly distributed, so most land points have an ocean antipode. For example, the US antipode is mostly in the Indian Ocean.
Is it accurate?
The coordinates are mathematically exact for a sphere. Earth is not a perfect sphere, but the result is accurate enough for practical and educational use.
