What are full screen solid colours used for?
Two main things. One is checking a display — smudges, backlight bleed and dead pixels. The other is using the screen itself as a light source or a backdrop, standing in for a ring light, a small product background or a tracing lightbox.
The screen sleeps while I am using it as a light.
Turn on keep screen awake. It uses the browser's Screen Wake Lock API and works in recent Chrome, Edge and Safari. If your browser does not support it the option is hidden, so raise your device's sleep timeout instead.
Which colours should I use to find dead pixels?
Cycle red, green and blue to catch subpixels that are dead or stuck, then white to find pixels that are off entirely and black to find pixels stuck on, plus any backlight bleed. Keep brightness at 100 per cent and colour temperature neutral.
Is chroma key green the same as pure green?
No. Pure green (#00FF00) is the pixel test colour. Broadcast chroma key green is closer to #00B140, chosen because it is the furthest common colour from human skin tones and therefore the easiest to key out.
Are the saved images uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is drawn on a canvas in your browser and saved directly, so nothing leaves your device.

Why fill a screen with one colour

A flat field of a single colour makes visible what normal content hides. White shows dust, smudges and pressure marks. Black shows backlight bleed and burn-in. Red, green and blue each isolate one subpixel channel, which is how dead and stuck pixels are found. This is the original purpose, and it is still the first thing worth doing with a new monitor or phone.

Lighting and backdrops

A second use has grown up alongside it: treating the display as a light. A monitor sits directly in front of your face and has a large emitting area, which gives soft, even light with gentle shadows. White works as a neutral fill; blue or purple puts a deliberate colour cast on a portrait. A tablet lying flat under a sheet of paper becomes a tracing lightbox, and small objects can be photographed against a solid screen as a backdrop.

Settings depend on the job

For testing, use 100 per cent brightness, neutral colour temperature, and switch off night mode — otherwise you are judging an adjusted image rather than the panel. For lighting, the opposite applies: 30 to 60 per cent is usually better, since a full-brightness white screen is uncomfortable to look at and washes out faces. Warm shifts the output toward tungsten; cool pushes it toward fluorescent or blue hour.

Keeping the screen awake

The most common annoyance when using a display as a light is power saving. After a few minutes the screen dims or sleeps and the shot is ruined. Turning on keep screen awake asks the browser to hold the display on, using the Screen Wake Lock web standard. Browsers without support simply do not show the option.
